Working away in York: one whole three-bed house, six beds, two bathrooms.

One home, in Heworth, ten minutes' drive out of the centre. Three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a washing machine, a private fenced garden and one free driveway space. Booked by the week or the month rather than the night — put your dates in the calculator and it returns the whole stay, with the long-stay discount already taken off.

The short answer. Unity Stays has one home in York: a whole three-bedroom house in Heworth, sleeping six, with two bathrooms, a washing machine, a private garden and one free driveway space. It suits a crew of three or four, or one person on a placement of a month or more. Put your dates in the calculator and it returns the whole-stay total, not a nightly rate.

What we cannot do here. One house is all we have in York, and it is not in the city centre — a ten-minute drive, a short bus ride, or about thirty minutes on foot. The driveway takes one car, so a three-car crew leaves two on the street. Only five of the six beds are in a bedroom; the sixth is a sofa bed in the lounge everyone else is sitting in. And if your dates are already taken we cannot split the house or conjure a second one — we would place you through our operator network instead.

Tell us the site and dates

What we have here

Each one opens on its own page, with the facts, the drawbacks and a calculator that gives you the total for your dates.

Three hotel rooms, or one house

A crew of three in a hotel is three rooms, every night, plus three breakfasts and a car park ticket each. The same crew in this house is one booking, one invoice, one cleaning charge and one set of bills, divided by however many of you sleep there. The per-head number falls as the crew grows. In a hotel it does not move.

We are not going to print a figure on this page, because rates move with the dates you pick and a number typed into a page is out of date the week after it is published. The calculator gives an indicative total for the whole stay; the booking engine gives the one that actually applies to your dates. Both are on this page.

  • A discount comes off the nightly rate once the stay passes seven nights, and a larger one once it passes twenty-eight. It is applied automatically — you do not have to ask for it.
  • Cleaning is charged once per stay, not once per night and not once per person.
  • Stays over ten nights add a mid-stay housekeeping visit, charged separately. Better you read that here than find it at checkout.
  • Stays of twenty-eight nights or more take a refundable security deposit. On shorter stays you can take a non-refundable damage waiver instead.
  • The kitchen is a hob, oven, microwave, fridge-freezer, kettle, toaster, cookware, crockery and utensils. Six weeks of eating out is a bigger line than most people budget for.
  • There is a washing machine in the house. That is the item nobody prices until week two.
  • Pets are allowed with prior approval, up to two dogs or one cat, at a per-pet charge for the stay.

Who is actually working in York

This page is not written for a weekend. The placements that run for weeks in York come from a small number of large employers, and they are worth naming because they decide whether York is your base or your commute.

  • York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has a workforce of around 10,000 across eight sites, serving approximately 800,000 people over an area of 3,400 square miles.
  • York Hospital sits on Wigginton Road, YO31 8HE — the trust's main site and the one most locum and agency placements name.
  • LNER is headquartered in York, at East Coast House, 25 Skeldergate, YO1 6DH.
  • York's Rail Operating Centre is the largest of its kind in the country, with LNER staff working alongside Northern, TransPennine Express and Network Rail colleagues.
  • York Central is a 45-hectare brownfield regeneration delivered by a McLaren Property and Arlington Real Estate joint venture with Homes England, Network Rail, City of York Council and the National Railway Museum. It is forecast to create up to 6,500 direct and indirect jobs.
  • The approved York Central phase covers 999 mixed-tenure homes with 20% affordable, a 99,188 sq ft innovation hub, 69,255 sq ft of retail and leisure, a 213-bed hotel and a new western entrance to the station. First phase completion is 2030, so this is a multi-year source of work rather than a headline.
  • Nestlé's Haxby Road site runs a confectionery factory 24 hours a day, 364 days a year, alongside the Nestlé Product Technology Centre — the company's global R&D centre of excellence for chocolate, sugar confectionery and biscuits — the Cereal Partners Worldwide R&D centre and the northern UK distribution warehouse.
  • Portakabin has its international head office and its production facility at Yorkon House, New Lane, Huntington, YO32 9PT.

A base for a catchment, not just for a city

The reason a York base works for health and rail placements is that neither industry stays inside the city. The hospital trust's eight sites run from Scarborough and Bridlington on the coast to Malton, Selby, Easingwold and back — 3,400 square miles of it. A placement that moves between two of those sites is one booking here, not two hotels in two towns.

The same is true of rail work. The operating centre and the head office are in York; the track is not.

  • Trust sites: York Hospital, Scarborough, Bridlington, Malton, Selby War Memorial, St Monica's Easingwold, White Cross Rehabilitation and Nelsons Court.
  • The A64 and A1079 are easily reached from the house, which puts the York, Leeds and Harrogate corridor in range by car.
  • York station reaches Leeds in 25 minutes and London King's Cross in under two hours, so a Friday client meeting does not need a hire car.
  • Heworth is north-east of the centre, the same side of the city as York Hospital on Wigginton Road. We have not measured that drive ourselves, so we are not going to publish a minutes figure for it.

The house, in the detail that decides a six-week stay

It is the only whole house among the five homes we let. No shared hallway, no communal front door, nobody above you. Heworth is a quiet residential street, and the neighbours are permanent — which is why quiet hours from 10pm are a house rule rather than a suggestion.

  • Three bedrooms: two doubles and a single. A double sofa bed in the lounge takes the sixth person.
  • Two bathrooms — a main bathroom with a full-size bath and overhead shower, and a separate walk-in shower room. On a weekday morning with three people leaving at once, that is the difference.
  • A team of three gets a bedroom each. A team of four means two share a double, or one takes the sofa bed.
  • Washing machine in the house. Fibre Wi-Fi throughout, though no speed figure is published for this property, so we will not quote one.
  • The workspace is the dining area, which seats four and is open-plan to the kitchen. There is no separate desk.
  • A private, fully fenced rear garden and patio with a table and chairs — yours, not shared.
  • Self check-in by lockbox from 4pm once the online ID check is done. Check-out by 10am.
  • The house uses noise and air-quality monitoring. It is there to catch parties and indoor smoking, and you should know about it before committing to six weeks.

The van, the car, and what York charges for them

York does operate a Clean Air Zone, and it will not cost a contractor a penny. It applies to local bus services only — those making five or more entries a day have to meet Euro VI or be fully electric. Cars and vans are not charged.

  • One free private driveway space directly outside the house, with free on-street parking nearby for anything that does not fit on it.
  • The Clean Air Zone covers the inner ring road area and charges local bus services, not private vehicles.
  • From 1 November 2026 the whole City of York Council area becomes a Smoke Control Area. The fire in the lounge is electric, so it makes no difference to your stay — we checked before writing this.
  • Most guests leave the vehicle on the drive and walk or bus into the centre rather than pay to park there.
  • One car on the drive is the hard limit. If three of you drive separately, plan for two on the street.

Booking it for someone else

Most long stays here are booked by somebody who is not sleeping in them: a project coordinator, an agency consultant, a relocation manager, an HR administrator with three names and a start date. The house is one booking and one invoice, which is usually the whole reason it wins against three hotel rooms.

If you want to see the total first, use the calculator on this page and then check the dates in the booking engine. If you would rather have a written quote and a person to talk to, our main site handles enquiries and quotes for York.

  • One invoice for the whole stay. Payment terms by arrangement rather than a card at checkout.
  • A named contact, not a support queue.
  • Extensions handled. Placements run over — we would rather extend the booking than make you re-book.
  • The lead guest completes a pre check-in form with photo ID before access is released, so you know who is in the house.

Things we would rather say now than at the door

Everything below is either in our own listing or is something we have deliberately not claimed. It takes a minute to read and saves an argument in week one.

  • It is not the city centre. If someone in the party needs to walk into the middle of York every morning, book somewhere else.
  • No dishwasher appears on the kitchen list, so we are not going to say there is one. Ask us if it decides the booking.
  • No separate desk. You work at the dining table.
  • No published Wi-Fi speed for this property. If a specific throughput is a condition of the booking, ask before you commit and we will get a measured figure.
  • We have not published a drive time from the house to York Hospital because we have not measured it.
  • Nestlé's York headcount is under revision following proposed UK job cuts announced in April 2026, so we describe the site rather than quote a staff number.

If York is the wrong base

Selby, Leeds, Middlesbrough, Doncaster and a long list of other towns are places we can place people through our operator network beyond the five homes listed on this site. Send us the requirement — the dates, the headcount and where the site actually is — and we will tell you honestly whether we can cover it.

Driving and parking

  • One free private driveway space directly outside the house. One car — that is the limit, and it is a hard one.
  • Free on-street parking nearby for a second or third vehicle.
  • York's Clean Air Zone applies to local bus services only: those making five or more entries a day into the inner ring road area must meet Euro VI or be fully electric. Cars and vans are not charged (york.gov.uk).
  • No charge applies to a van you keep on the drive for six weeks, which is not true of every city we operate in.
  • From 1 November 2026 the whole City of York Council area becomes a Smoke Control Area. The lounge fire here is electric, so it does not affect the stay.
  • City-centre parking is paid, which is why most guests leave the vehicle on the drive and walk or take the bus in.
  • The A64 and A1079 are easily reached from Heworth for sites out towards Leeds, Harrogate, Malton and the coast.

Questions people ask

Can a crew of four each have their own bedroom?

No. There are three bedrooms — two doubles and a single — so three people get a room each. The fourth either shares a double or takes the double sofa bed in the lounge. Five of the six sleeping spaces are in a bedroom; the sixth is in the room everyone else is sitting in. If four separate bedrooms is a condition of the placement, tell us and we will say so straight away rather than sell you this.

What does a six-week stay cost?

We do not publish a figure on this page, because the rate moves with the dates. Use the calculator here for an indicative whole-stay total, then check your actual dates in the booking engine for the price that applies. In broad terms: a discount comes off the nightly rate past seven nights and a larger one past twenty-eight, cleaning is charged once for the stay, a mid-stay housekeeping visit is added and charged separately on stays over ten nights, and stays of twenty-eight nights or more take a refundable security deposit.

Can you invoice our company rather than take a card?

Yes. Long stays here are usually booked by an employer, an agency or a relocation manager, and it is one invoice for the whole stay with payment terms by arrangement. You get a named contact rather than a support queue. Extensions are handled as extensions — placements run over, and re-booking a house that is already occupied helps nobody.

How close is it to York Hospital?

Heworth is north-east of the city centre, the same side of the city as York Hospital on Wigginton Road, YO31 8HE. We have not driven and timed that route ourselves, so we are not going to publish a minutes figure for it. Check it on a map against your own shift start — and if you want, ask us and we will find out properly.

Will the van cost me anything to keep in York?

Not in charges. York's Clean Air Zone applies to local bus services only, so cars and vans are not charged to drive in. The house has one free driveway space directly outside and free on-street parking nearby. The only cost is city-centre parking if you drive in rather than walk or bus.

Is there a washing machine?

Yes, in the house. It is the single amenity that decides whether a stay of several weeks works, and it is the reason a company that booked a small team in here extended and then booked again.

Is it in the city centre?

No, and we would rather be blunt about it. Heworth is a quiet residential area outside the centre — about a ten-minute drive, a short bus ride, or roughly thirty minutes on foot. What you get instead is a whole house with a driveway and a private fenced garden, which the centre does not offer at any length of stay.

You only have one house in York. What if it is booked?

Then it is booked — we cannot split it and we will not pretend otherwise. Send us the dates, the headcount and where the site actually is, and we will place you through our operator network. That covers Selby, Leeds, Middlesbrough, Doncaster and a long list of other towns where we hold no property of our own.

Need somewhere we don't have

If none of these fit, or the job is in a city we don't have a home in, send us the requirement. We place what we can ourselves and put the rest to the operators we work with.
